Ep. 20 - Sports Therapy for Kids with Tomer Kamil
Social Emotional Learning For Kids with "Sports Therapy"
Today I have a chat with Tomer Kamil
His organization Jumping Forward implements programs in schools for children to work on their social and emotional skills using sports.
He calls this process Sports Therapy, that is using sports as a tool to provide therapy to kids
We talk about why its essential and effective to combine mental learning with physical learning
Not every kid wants to or has the ability to participate in sports in the more traditional competitive way, but that doesn't mean they have to miss out on the benefits of physical activity entirely
We chat about just how effective a program can or can't be if the parents of the child aren't on board and modeling healthy behavior
We talk about the phenomena of parents externalizing the responsibility for their childrens' results and performance in learning and development
Tomer shares with us a video demonstration of one of the exercises that his program does with kids, and we go over what the participants experience in the video
We discuss the importance of highlighting and rewarding desirable behavior in children, instead of just focusing on punishing the negative behavior
And Tomer shares an interesting philosophy of empowering troubled kids instead of punishing them at all.
This leads to a discussion of powerlessness being an overwhelming present feeling in a lot of people today, leading to negative behavior in both children and adults alike.
Join us as we chat about all of these things and more on episode 20 of The Zakariya Frank Show
